What has happened

to Team USA's track and field competitors; especially the sprinters?

Understandably, Bolt is lightning. But dropping the baton; BOTH men and women dropping the baton in the 4X100m relay qualifying round. Awful. Disappointing. Near depressing.

Tuesday, August 19, 2008

Usain is INSANE!

Bolt's speed is unbelievable. Not only did he win the 100m in world record time, 9.69; but he held back and celebrated for the final 35 feet or so.

Former USA sprinter Michael Johnson has stated that he does not believe Bolt will break his world record time in the 200m.

I disagree.

Although I would love to see the USA reclaim its dominance in sprinting, Usain Bolt has captivated my attention much like Michael Phelps did.

That and the thought of him pushing a bobsled in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada (i.e., the NEXT "Cool Runnings").

Too good to leave a comment

Is Phelps AMAZING or is he just a freak of nature? He has said that these 8 gold medals he has won are proof that you can do anything you set your mind too. In some instances I agree with him, but having the physical body features that he does contributes even more in my opinion. The guy is 6'4" has a wing span of 6'7" and has hands the size of hubcaps and his size 14 feet make even "Flipper" jealous. He is not your average joe off the street wanting to win some gold medals. God gave this man the physical features to be a great swimmer and Phelps has not squandered his talent. I can not get up earlier, lift more weights, or train longer to make my hands bigger or my arms longer. Don't get me wrong I still think Mr. Phelps is the best of the best but swimming is uniquely different from many of the other Olympic competitions. By having larger body features (hands, feet, wingspan) will give you a distinct advantage over the other competitors. The only other people I know who have similair physical traits as Phelps does are playing basketball. Will Phelps 8 Golds convince more young athletes to trade in their baggy shorts for a speedo? I seriously doubt it. As long as leagues are paying basketball players millions of dollars and Schools are offering scholarships for one year stints in college the local YMCA pools will only be filled with the daily elderly water aerobics class. -The Milkman

Team USA

men's basketball

They are just So fast. You can't teach athleticism; but it takes a coach to put it all together -- that and players determined to win a common goal.

Coach K is a decent coach of course, at the collegiate level. But even more it's been the 3 year commitment of everyone to bring the gold back to the USA in these Olympics.

A previous post mentioned how one national sports talk contributor disliked the Olympics because it "promoted capitalism as patriotism."

I couldn't disagree more. The level these guys are playing at is not for another million dollar endorsement. The intensity and fun Team USA is displaying proves they are in Beijing for one unified accomplishment; to stand as TEAM USA on the podium with Olympic gold hung around their neck, the USA flag raised highest and the national anthem played across the stadium for all to recognize the greatness of this Dream Team's redemption.

The guys were great.

Fielding questions from the host and numerous callers, these four high school seniors answered with precision and honesty.

Tonight I had the privilege of interviewing four student athletes from our local high school.

Fall sports preseason has begun; and their quest to repeat as Div. II Soccer and Cross Country champions is underway.

Not only is it crucial for students to balance academics, athletics, work and social lives but also essential to develop into honorable men and women.

These four young men are seemingly on the right path.

USA 100m hopeful fails to qualify

As I mentioned previously I used to be a huge Carl Lewis fan. I loved watching the sprint events of the Olympics. Therefore when Gay hurt his hamstring 6 weeks ago in Eugene, Oregon I became nervous that USA's #1 100m gold medal contender may suffer in the Olympics.

Tyson Gay ran the fastest 100 meter ever recorded 6 days before the injury. 9.68. Though wind-aided, AMAZING.

Gay was eliminated with a 5th place finish in his semifinal.

Phelps

Amazing.

I grew up a Carl Lewis fan; who was once tied for the most Olympic gold medals at 9.

Now, Michael Phelps has the record with 11.

He still has three events to go as the favorite where he could receive an unprecedented 8 gold medals in this 2008 Olympics! So far he is 5-for-5; all world records.

AWESOME.

Manny who? We got YOUK!

Tonight's 19-17 victory at Fenway vs. the Texas Rangers very well could be the defining game for the Boston Red Sox this season.

In so many ways I can draw similarities and comparisons of what may be/to come.

From having a pitcher called up to start today/ace Curt Schilling out and giving the reigns to the young guns who've been great at times and young at others; to the 10-0 lead in the first inning/quick start to the season, battling/regaining the AL East top spot before the All-Star break, giving up the lead/Tampa Bay's current lead in the AL East, regaining the lead/HOPEFULLY postseason play, players stepping up/HOPEFULLY back-to-back AL Championship; and even closing the game with a little extra drama/POSSIBLY winning the World Series back-to-back but not in another sweep of the NL champions ...

Men's Gymnastics

I've grown obsessed watching the Olympics.

Those gymnasts are absolutely amazing. Their strength, balance and agility is unfathomable.

Team USA

wins debut by 31 over host China, 101-70.

Team USA turned the ball over on its first possession and Yao Ming proceeded to give China a 3-0 lead when he hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key.

Team USA went up 28-21 early in the second quarter, but China tied it at 29-29 on another 3-pointer with six minutes to play in the first half.

That’s when Team USA responded with a 16-3 run capped by 3 dunks; a proud display showing their superior athleticism and one-on-one play.

BUT Team USA shot a woeful 7/29 from the INTERNATIONAL three-point line ... it may come back to bite 'em just like the Memphis Tigers foul shooting in the NCAA championship ...

A national sports talk

guy was sharing how he hated the Olympics because it exploited capitalism as patriotism.

I absolutely love the Olympics. Though capitalism/$ is key to so much, I still have to believe that the Olympics are the greatest sporting event in the world bringing out true patriotism from each athlete, coach, trainer and groundskeeper.

from The Milkman

I am a Duke HATER; but this was thought provoking. In case you missed it, another comment worth making public.

"Looking back it is easy to say Laettner was a stiff and just a ball boy but at the time he was a elite college player. His production as a 6'11" F/C is the same that foreign countries are putting out on the court against the USA the last 8 years. Bigs that can shoot the ball from outside AND make foul shots. His senior year at Duke, Laettner shot 55.7% from 3pt range (54/97) and 82% from the foul line. He was the Naismith National College Player of the Year. That is why he made the team, and that is why during those Olympics he played in more games and logged more minutes then John Stockton. I am not a Duke fan or a Laettner fan but I am also not a self proclaimed Duke Hater like the creator of this blog topic is.Sure Laettner only made one All-Star game but railing on him for not winning a championship? ... What do you think of this team that the USA has sent to restore order to the universe and regain the gold? I think it is pretty balsy for us to proclaim ourselves as the favorites to win the Gold. Is it really such an upset if we lose? We haven't won a Gold in basketball for 8 years. In the meantime we've been getting beat down by countries who have sharp shooting guards and bigs who can run the floor set screens and pop mid range jumpers. Sounds like our USA basketball team needs a few more players like Christian Laettner was and a few less Allan Iversons."

Are you KIDDING me!?!

In case you missed this comment, I thought I'd post it for all of you to read - in ref. to the "Olympics" post:

"Christian Donald Laettner (born August 17, 1969 in Angola, New York) is a retired American professional basketball player and entrepreneur who played 13 seasons in the NBA. He starred for the 1991 and 1992 NCAA champion Duke University Blue Devils. He is considered one of the greatest collegiate players of all time...guess he did a little more than fill water bottles and carry bags!"

And as a pro how many teams did he play on? Wait, wait, how many times was he an all-star? Oh yeah, does he have a NBA championship ring? Laettner = NBA STIFF!

-- thanks for the comments. I truly love them. But I will exploit any comment that is ridiculous, in my opinion. THAT seeming controversy is what keeps this blog & my Sunday night sports rant INTERESTING.

Peace y'all.

The Office

I thoroughly enjoy this television show. I understand the 5th season is about to start so I'm a little late with it.

I bought the first season and finished watching the 4th season on-line. (Seasons 2 & 3 are making their way to my PO Box ...)

It's great because everyone can see a little of themselves in each character. Of course we all believe, or hope, that we are more like one character vs. that of another. But the greatest, for me, is relating someone we've worked with specifically with a character on the show.

If you haven't, start watching!

OLYMPICS

I grew up watching the summer Olympics as a family.

I loved the 100 meter, as guys battled for the title of "World's Fastest Human." Carl Lewis was my favorite Olympic athlete.

I remember watching Roy Jones Jr. ripped off by the judges in the '88 Seoul Olympics.

But my personal highlight came when I was a junior in high school and the original dream team tasted gold in 1992. The USA men's basketball team featured the greatest all-star line up ever. (Although that team included a stiff from Duke ... I supposed they needed someone to carry their bags and fill the water bottles.)

Bring on the Olympics; EVEN if they are in China.

I grow weary

of the Brett Favre saga ...

I understand that when a professional athlete feels as though they can compete it's difficult to retract the retirement tears. But just like Mike should've, maybe Brett should retire after one of his best seasons in years.

Say it ain't so ...

Manny to LA ...

at least it's the Dodgers and not the Angels; although Torre is a former Yankee ...

Manny was going to leave at the end of the season, at least Boston got something for him. I would have preferred another world championship but I guess all-star Jason Bay isn't a bad consolation prize.

Who knows, maybe Bay can bring new focus, energy, excitement & MIDDLE RELIEF PITCHING ...

Oh Pudge.

The Detroit Tigers traded C Ivan Rodriguez to the New York Yankees for P Kyle Farnsworth.

Now who becomes the Yankees set up man to Rivera?

Tuesday, July 29, 2008

Manny

What IF Manny's MRI on his knee wasn't/isn't really negative ...

... I try to avoid conspiracy theories, though I find responses to them amusing.

As for Manny being traded, I liken it to a popular radio host who stated the Lakers would never/could never trade Kobe Bryant because they wouldn't get anything in return close to his worth.

Right now, I think that's the same with Manny.

Back from a hiatus.

My sincerest of apologies for lingering on this blog.

Now with the Olympics in sight and the MLB standings heating up when it matters, prepare yourselves.

It's going to get more interesting then ever up in here.

Faithless in Vermont?

Are Vermonters heathens? Not exactly, but they are less religious than people in most other states, according to a national poll conducted by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life. The U.S. Religious Landscape Survey, which combines results for Vermont and New Hampshire, suggests that people in the two states pray less often, are less likely to attend weekly services and are less likely to believe in God with absolute certainty than are people in the rest of the nation.Nationally, about 71 percent of the nearly 35,000 people polled said their belief in God or a universal spirit was absolutely certain. In Vermont/New Hampshire, the response was 54 percent — which while still a majority was considerably lower than the national rate. Results show Vermont/New Hampshire consistently logging the lowest or nearly lowest levels among states in what the pollsters call religious commitment. About 23 percent of the Vermont/New Hampshire respondents attend religious service at least once a week, compared with 39 percent nationally. Thirty-six percent said religion is very important to them, compared to 56 percent nationally. The survey suggested religious commitment is highest in the South, where evangelical protestant churches have relatively large membership.

the Boston Red Sox

How much does the latest consecutive losses to the New York Yankees mean?

Papelbon is still the 2nd best closer in baseball; after Mariano Rivera. I hate to say it; but I'm trying to be unbiased instead of a fan ...

These two losses/wins COULD be the turning point for both teams. With the Tampa Bay Rays in first place, the Red Sox must win close games. While the Yankees winning two in dramatic fashion from the World Champion Boston Red Sox, their confidence must be growing which better translate into hitting if they even want to be in the play-off race at the end of this, or next, season.

Did that make any sense? Even the biggest KG-homer has to laugh!

2008 NBA Finals: Game 6

Yesterday afternoon, 2:24 PM, the "Interested-insiders" received a text stating "Boston is breaking out the champagne tonight. Celtics by 13."

"I see it happening tonight. Not sure by 13 though." DJ/CO

As my brother-in-law (MI) told me the C's won despite Rondo's play, and a lot of times even in spite of KG's soft play, I called KG would get 20 & 10.

Now breaking this down, Rondo is quick, fast & good at getting the entire team involved. However, offensively, he looked terrible last night -- ESPECIALLY with his 21 points because he was 8/20, blowing by defenders then missing numerous lay-ups and 3-footers!

I like KG, although he gave the worst post-game interview ever. One can pass it off because he's so emotional. But wow, that was awful!

Last game my bro (MA) texted, "Pierce isn't flashy but he's the MVP of this series." Paul's a stud. His play-off performance solidifies him as one of the best in the league.

Now, I did receive this text, "Repeat? A lot of other teams will make wholesale changes." RB/NC
At first glance, I thought "NO way." But thinking about it, the C's have A LOT invested -- for temporary satisfaction. RG/NY sent an e-mail during the Detroit series sharing how the C's weren't built for a dynasty. They were built to win now.

Which they did in the regular season and play-offs!

There is a 2-3 year window for the C's to win again. But I just pray they don't repeat the after years of the 2006 Miami Heat Championship.

They better keep Posey and House, draft a tall big and get Tony Allen into some ball handling clinics.

As for Rondo, with work his ethic, the shooting will come. The last two year's he's learned to become "Doc" River's point guard; breaking pressure defense & distributing the ball to the best best players.

Sunday, June 15, 2008

I called it @ 10:44 PM.

Rondo had just hit a baseline jumper to tie the game at 62 early in the 3rd quarter; and I declared the Celtics would celebrate their 17th championship on the home floor of the Los Angeles LAKERS.

My moments of anxiousness proved to be well-founded as my "media credibility is on the line not that I had given any to you yet." SM, AL

The C's tried to put the proverbial "nail" in the coffin; but instead shot 1 for 8 from 3 in the 3rd.

The pressure seemed to get to Rondo as the "Interested-insiders" cried for #50, Eddie House, to enter, having Pierce run the point/offense through him every time.

"Garnett needs to com in or it's over." DD, NY

I told my brother-in-law to look for Kobe to get the calls down the stretch.

Within seconds KG & Pierce consecutively were called for their 5th personal fouls with 3:31 left in the game, down 1, 92-91.

"Great. Dumb foul by Pierce." JF, MA

KG did not look good down the stretch. He missed 2 foul shots and was out rebounded by Gasol.

Pierce gets "stripped" by Kobe (foul. Foul. FOUL!), who dunks the ball and LA goes up by 4 with 37.4.

"It was totally a foul. MVP gets calls." DJ, CO

KG had a chance to dunk or tip in Ray Allen's miss; but missed the shot all together. Tough loss for KG.

I admit I was wrong; but BRING ON GAME 6.

at 11:16 "Your original predication is looking pretty good." DJ, CO
My original prediction was LA by 7.

a plethora of first half texting

I said to "Expect a hard foul this game. IF the LAKERS want to make a statement that they are still in this series; or if the C's are down by a lot late in the 2nd half, stating they are not going to be denied their 17th championship."

"I would like the Celts if Pierce wasn't a crybaby." EM, VT
"Rondo is the key, if he is close to 100 percent, it's over." RB, NC
"The Celtics have won despite Rondo this year. He's terrible; can't hit a 15 foot jumper." JB, MI
"Yes but they are more fluid on offense with Rondo in there. He spreads the floor and hits (Ray) Allen and (Paul) Pierce in the corners or wrap-arounds to Garnett." RB, NC

LA had the Boston Celtics down by 19 points in the first quarter.

"C's need to step it up. Can't expect to make 20 point combacks every time." DJ, CO

PAUL PIERCE goes for 21 first half points! Cut the lead to 55-52.
"Told ya he was this good." JF, MA

"I wonder if the Lakers will fold with this Celts rally ... Garnett isn't even needed now." DD, NY
"Gasol is SOFT." JF, VT
"Gasol's gonna get traded when Bynum's healthy next year." DD, NY

Game 5

Prediction(s):

I sent a text to the Interested-insiders this AM beckoning for predictions.

I say LA by 7; although I really think the C's could've stolen LA's heart in game 4. If there's any hesitation by Odom or Gasol, the LAKERS are going to get blown out.

DJ from CO texts @ 11:58 this morning, "I don't know. The C's might have taken the wind out of their sails last game. Lakers might just roll over and give up. I gotta think about it."

SM from AL texts @ 12:40 PM, "Lakers by 13."

Evidently

Curt Schilling, in his http://www.38pitches.com/ blog, was more than accurate regarding Kobe Bryant's leadership qualities based on Kobe's game 4 post game rant.

THANK YOU MR. BRENDLE

for the link suggestions.

"Should _ bet it! They were gettin 7.5"

This is the entire text I received after my "celts by 8" text, "4 the game? If so, strong words. Should _ bet it! They were gettin 7.5."

I didn't respond. Frankly, I got lucky with that prediction "celts by 8." There was no doubt before the game, even with Rondo's ailing ankle, that the C's could win the 2008 NBA Finals game 4 by under 10. So I took a stab and was off by 2.

If you bet, I'm not liable.

It would be nice to have LA win Game 5 (maybe 12 or less creating some drama) simply to watch the C's celebrate on their home floor, raising champagne to their 17th World Championship. ALTHOUGH after watching this series, there is no doubt in my mind that the Boston Celtics could easily close this NBA Finals out on Sunday, Game 5 in Los Angeles.

GAME 4

I was packing the car last night and received a text just before tip off, "prediction?...i say garnett has 30...celts win by 10 plus." I responded to him and several others before tip off "celts by 8."

I guess it's "unprofessional" maybe for a sports talk host to admit (maybe I should fake it, like I was told at a previous job ...); but I missed most of the 1st quarter and fell asleep on the living room floor shortly into the 3rd quarter.

The C's were down; but I just thought of the NCAA tourney with UNC/Kansas. Carolina couldn't make it over the hump; but in the NBA we've seen it happen hundreds of times.

The highlights showed both Pierce & Ray with and-one, reverse lay ups that shook the confidence of the entire Lakers.

KG didn't get 30; but the big three good got GREAT contributions from their bench -- HOUSE for 11 and POSEY with 18!!!

In regard to NBA Finals game 3

Another excellent post from just outside Boston,

"Is that the best the Lakers got? I'm still not that impressed with them. I don't think we'll see another night when KG and Pierce are so off their game. I think you'll see a much more aggressive Celts team this time around. As long as they keep going to the basket and not settle for outside jumpers they'll be fine. I also like seeing House out there in place of Rondo to spread the floor so Kobe can't cheat off of him like he did Rondo. Don't get me wrong... I love Rondo but with Kobe D'ing him up and slacking way off of him, it renders his driving and his speed useless. The Celts are by far the better team and they'll win this thing in 5 maybe 6 games."

I LOVE the input.

Check this,

"This kind of goes along with this post (former Phoenix Sun) and your best player survey. While I don't like him I voted for Jordan. However, this referee/conspiracy theory brings to light many, many, many of the calls that went Jordan's way or didn't get called even though Jordan committed an offensive foul. Would he have been nearly as good if he didn't get every call or no call? "

THANKS AGAIN FOR ASSISTING ME IN MY SPORTS RANT AND TALK SHOW PREPARATION!

"Sports are useless!"

When I lived in Colorado I had a friend who was adamant that sports were useless. (We weren't best friends by the way ... but she was cool.)

She asked me "what good are sports?" then proceeded to rant how too much money is poured into athletes, promoting greed and jealousy. She said kids are made fun of for not being good enough and their self-esteem is damaged and feelings are hurt when the lose or worse yet, don't even make the team ... (Sounds like a bitter girlfriend who can't get over being dumped/cut from a team.)

I wasn't going to change her mind so I simply smiled and said something to the effect of, "Yeah, too many times those involved in sports have created a monster. But I definitely learned a lot about life because of them."

Sports are terrific because they teach so much about life; submitting to the authority of coaches and the rules of the sport, getting along and working together with teammates, dealing with joy of winning and the proverbial, "agony," of losing, work ethic, strategy and SO much more.

Where else can one game these skills in such a great environment?

former Phoenix Sun

I just got an e-mail from a good friend who used to play for the NBA's Phoenix Suns.

This is his response to my question, "Is there any credence to believe the 'conspiracy theory' that referees are fixing games per order of the NBA?"

His response:

"I've never HEARD anything specifically, but I HAVE to believe there have been times where something wasn't right. Would be very difficult to do without being obvious, but possible, I'm pretty fed up with the direction of sports anyway (especially professional, but not ONLY)!"

MORE!!!

MORE LINKS, POLLS & SURVEYS!!!

CONSPIRACY

I was listening to sports talk radio this morning and they can't get away from the NBA referees conspiracy theory to "fix" games. One host stated if players could not foul out it would clear up the referees making game changing calls.

I could NOT disagree more. If you allow players the freedom to foul more, even with a greater penalty of two shots and the ball for the other team; it will not "clean up" the game! That's ludicrous.

I know the ABA has that rule. But (even with the Vermont Frost Heaves as the back-to-back ABA Champions) look at the week-to-week schedule of the ABA. (The Frost Heaves left the ABA just joined the Premier Basketball League.*)

Which game

will the Boston Celtics win in Los Angeles?

Game 4
Game 5
Neither
Both

I called the C's in 6 or the LAKERS in 5; and LA is not going to win in 5. But for the CELTICS to win the 2008 NBA Finals in 6 games they must win 1 game in Los Angeles.

Game 3 was a great opportunity for the C's to win; but they came up short. Home court has been such an incredible advantage in the play-offs this year.

I don't believe the LAKERS can win the series. Boston outplayed them in game 3 with Pierce and KG struggling.

You may say I'm crazy because the LAKERS won. But the LAKERS simply scored more points in game three. It is evident that the Boston Celtics are the better team this year.

APOLOGIES

for misspelling Sen. Barack H. Obama's name as "Barak."

Thoughts on the 2nd half

1. Eddie House was key in the 2nd half for the C's. LA couldn't double off him like they do with Rondo.

2. The referees stole the game.

3. This Finals is still yet to see the proverbial series-defining hard foul (which I told my wife would happen after the 1st quarter).

4. Sasha Vujacic is a poor man's John Starks -- emotional, streaky and has a chip on each shoulder.

5. Posey is the most valuable player off either bench. He goes after all the loose balls, defends and keeps the defense honest with his outside shooting.

6. Ray on Kobe in the final minute ... what's "Doc" thinking!?!

Game 3 first half observation

LA is aggressively driving the basketball. Well, Kobe is driving and getting foul calls. Seemingly the referees have been influenced by Phil's game 2 post game rant.

We've witnessed KG turn into a defensive Rasheed Wallace. He's settling for jump shots this half when he could dominate the post; especially with Odom having 3 personal fouls.

Vujacic is 4/5, including 1/1 from the 3-point line, for 12 first half points.

Pressure is mounting as can be seen by 12 missed foul shots.

Translation:

Kobe is getting every call and Vujacic is on fire. KG needs to post up and Paul has to take over, while setting Ray up for 3's. Unless the refs take it away and call fouls on Pierce, the C's should win.

LA by 15 if Pierce is in foul trouble the entire 2nd; or, as D2 calls, C's by 3!

Thank you!

EVEN THOUGH I HAVE NOT RECEIVED MANY E-MAILS OR COMMENTS, YOUR POLL VOTES ARE EXTREMELY APPRECIATED. THANKS SO MUCH!

Kool-Aid

There is a nickname which references people who simply believe whatever someone says because they like that person. They are called a "Kool Aid Drinker." (Not saying I'm a "Kool Aid Drinker" of Sean Hannity, but I really enjoy his analysis 85-90% of the time.)

In regards to oil and gas prices, he presents the argument (not word for word) that it doesn't make sense to raise taxes on the overseas companies which are drilling, manufacturing and selling oil to the US. The government is the only one that benefits from that tax increase. Plus the government is already making $0.40+/gallon (or maybe it's on the dollar of each gallon) we purchase at the gas station without doing anything. Well, they say that income goes for roads and transportation costs ...

However, doesn't it make a lot more sense to provide more jobs within the US, drill on our own soil and lower our demand on foreign resources.

Is the biggest reason for not drilling more on American soil because special interest groups, like those of the "conservation" persuasion, have their hand in the financial pockets of politicians?

GREAT comment you may have missed!

In regards to Game 2 of the 2008 NBA Finals:

"The Celtics were being aggressive and taken it to the hoop (especially Powe) where the Lakers were taking outside jumpers. You don't get those calls when you shoot outside. I think the actual number of foul calls was 28 BOS to 21 LA and 2 of those were when LA purposefully fouled at the end so that's not much of a diff. It just happened that the sorry LA Defense fouled the Celts when they were in the act of shooting. Besides I seem to recall quite a bit of foul shooting discrepancies when the Celts were playing against Atlanta and Cleveland. Those 2 teams made it to the line tons more then the C's. But of course, they were being the aggressors and taken to the rim where the Celts were settling for outside jumpers.

Jackson is the master at whining about fouls and getting the refs to listen. There's no doubt in my mind that Kobe is going to get a ton of calls in Game 3. However, if the Lakers don't start playing D, this things going to be over really soon."

from the station on Stowe Street,

this is "Wrapping Up the Weekend"; and I'm your host ...

Upon review, it has become unmistakeably clear that I need to capture the attention of you, the listener of the ESPN Sunday Night Baseball broadcast. It is imperative that I stimulate your attention, keeping you entertained, involved and tuned in for my 30-minute sports rant & talk show.

Thus, I will be changing my format from simply retelling the days MLB scores & highlights. (The ESPN Sunday Night Baseball broadcast team already presents the majority of these during their post game show.)

Therefore, without duplicating ESPN's MLB stories, I will have greater freedom within my 30-minute time constraints to present calculated stories that interest you the audience while reflecting my very own personality and sometimes overly-opinionated opinion.

I read the headline

"Is Obama black or biracial?"

Are you kidding me!?!

First, what does it matter? Second, is the media so limited that this is the headline they believe the American voting public wants ... casting Americans as racist?

Ridiculous!

Phil Jackson

Moral victory?

The LAKERS cut a 24-point deficit to 2-points before losing by 6.

Phil Jackson sat NBA MVP, Kobe Bryant (aka, "Jordan-Wannabe") during distinct runs by the CELTICS.

... a lot of people are talking about the glaring foul shooting discrepancy, 10-10 for LA and 27 of 38 for Boston; but where did LA shoot?

Phil's trying all of his "Jedi mind tricks" to give confidence to his team and intimidate the referees as the series goes to Los Angeles.

PO-sho'

James Posey defends, hustles and hits 3's. (I'm infamous for 2 out of those 3.) He's been the best pick up for the C's bench.

Then Leon Powe, who I believe has a lot better scoring hands than injured Perkins, goes off for 21 points in under 15 minutes of playing time; shooting 6 of 7 from the field and 9 for 13 from the foul line ... Powe is not the shot-blocking defender of Perkins; but he definitely made the most of his opportunity last night.

41 4th quarter POINTS

The Los Angeles LAKERS scored 41-4th quarter points, including 7 3-pointers to nearly eliminate the Boston CELTICS 24-point 3rd quarter lead. Kobe scored 13 of his 30 points in the 4th, including 2 foul shots to close the gap 104-102.

C's! C'mon, close out games.

4th Quarter???

What the heck happened to the Celtics in the 4th quarter?

I go live on-air early in the 3rd quarter of game 2, 2008 NBA Finals, with the Celts up 20-something.

Just doing my thing; and then I look up and the C's are up 3 with 50 seconds left ... What the HECK happened?

But yeah, yeah, I know, I'm the supposed sports guy, so I'll tell you what happened all next week.

from D2 (Ohio/NY) on Celts in Game 1

So they looked really good I thought. Big three didn't have the jitters I thought they would. If they can take game 2 - I'm pretty comfortable with Celts in 6 (if Pierce can recover that is)

"Global Warming"

Man-made or not, stop polluting, conserve energy and become a better steward of what God has given us. That's common sense. Breathe cleaner air, drink purer water.

As far as "Global Warming," it has become a political issue for personal gain. And "they" say Democrats are against capitalism ...

Jason Taylor to New England

for Matt Cassel ... Miami needs help at QB and Cassel was great at calling in plays for Brady.

Will Barak H. Obama succumb

to selecting Hillary R. Clinton as the VP candidate? Would it be the DNC's (Democratic National Committee) ultimate downfall or dream ticket?

BIG picture

If the Boston Red Sox expect an easy road to the AL East division title, they may want to watch their back.

Shields pitch that hit Coco may have been a statement for the season. MLB's Tampa Bay Rays are willing, and obviously, ready to fight to dethrone the Boston Red Sox.

Personally I think the only thing keeping the Boston Red Sox from repeating as AL East champions would be injuries; not the play of Tampa Bay or any other team in that division.

Sports Analyst

Our pastor's wife is like a chorus-analyst ...

My favorite sports analysts:

NBA - Hubie Brown, w/ growing respect for Jon Barry
MLB - Peter Gammons
NCAA men's basketball - believe it or not, former Dukie, Jay Bilas

I still doN'T like

Kobe but I did respect his game last night. He was a woeful 9 of 26 from the field for 24 points; including 6 of 6 from the foul line and 0 for 3 from distance. But he didn't "press." He passed to open teammates, took good shots and simply came up short.

KG was 9 of 22 from the field. He didn't show up in the 4th. He had one thunderous follow-up dunk. But if the "Big Ticket" is going to get a ring this year, post up hard and finish strong every time!

I LOVE this NBA Finals

BECAUSE of all the classic moments associated with the Los Angeles LAKERS rivalry with the Boston CELTICS.

I watched these two teams battle in the formidable stages of my basketball interest. Magic leading the break, Kareem's sky-hook, Michael Cooper's high socks, defense & three-point shooting, UNC alum James Worthy, Byron Scott and even AC Green's memorable performances ... Crazy to think how big of a LAKERS fan I was.

Big Brown

Belmont Stakes.

Triple Crown?

Paul Pierce

When I played in high school and "college" no one ever doubted my effort. I played with "heart"; which is a polite way of saying I didn't possess a lot of skill or much basketball intelligence. But I dove on the floor and hustled.

At times I would get legitimately twisted up and/or knocked down ... and being tired from all that hustle; I didn't "fake" an injury, but would certainly take an extended break to regain my teams and my own energy ... Plus, I did feel as though I was tough (inspirational, even) because I came back into the game with a taped thumb, sprained ankle or strained something ...

Last night in game 1 of the NBA Finals, Boston Celtics F/C, Kendrick Perkins, fell into teammate and team captain Paul Pierce's knee. For extra measure Perkins popped him in the back of the head with his elbow.

Pierce went down, had to be carried off the floor by teammates and then was rolled into the locker room in a wheelchair.

Pierce stated he heard something "pop," believing his play in the 2008 NBA Finals was finished.

Less than one (1!) minute later, he learned it was only a sprain. One-minute and four seconds later Paul Pierce came jogging out of the tunnel and to the Celtics bench.

"Doc" put him in the game and Pierce hit back-to-back three's.

It is ridiculous for anyone to put this event in the same sentence with Willis Reed's heroics. But, for an athlete to hear the proverbial "pop" in a knee, it is devastating to the psyche.

But I laughed when DJ from Colorado texted me, "Come on! A wheelchair! Really? Come on!"

I just hope Pierce really is good to go for the rest of the NBA Finals.

GOON

NOT the great back-in-the-day movie "Goonies" but straight up GOON!

After Boston Red Sox outfielder Coco Crisp was intentionally hit by James Sheilds' pitch (presumably in retaliation to a hard slide Coco made into second base the night before), Coco charged the mound, ducked a right hook from Shields, landed a right to the back side of Shields head and then was wrapped up and wrestled to the ground by Tampa Bay Rays catcher Navarro.

Benches cleared and we all witnessed cheap shot Jonny Gomes, #31 of MLB's Tampa Bay Rays, come running out of the dugout and jump on a restrained Coco Crisp. Gomes wasn't trying to break up the fray, he started throwing punches to Coco's back and head. Then, as the ruckus heightened #13 Carl Crawford comes, literally, sliding in throwing shots at Crisp's head and face.

Now I'm entertained by brawls and I enjoy old school Ultimate Fighting Championship videos. But what a dirty, chippy, thug-type move.

Even IF Gomes or Crawford was sticking up for their pitcher or teammate who was the recipient of Coco's hard slide the game before, you don't start throwing punches on a guy who's already down.

from G2 regarding the NBA Finals

I say Celts in 7. I'd have Garnett on Odom and Perkins on Gasol. As far as who guards Kobe, I might take my chances alternating Allen and Peirce. Allen played great D on Hamilton last series but struggled with foul trouble. Whoever you have guarding Kobe really dosent matter a whole lot cause he's going to get his no matter who is on him. The Celts really need to also focus on offense and make sure they don't have any lapses, like last series.

1st Place

The Boston Red Sox have reclaimed the top spot in the AL East. They are so deep that last year's utility player Eric Hinske (who I bought an autographed baseball at a non-profit church camp silent auction for $35.00) was the "Top Batter" for Tampa Bay.

I understand Hinske isn't a perennial all-star or even a household name.

But even with "Papi" out and knowing he can't be replaced by anyone in baseball, the Red Sox have the luxury (some may say that only money can buy) to be deep enough to compete and send utility players to be other teams top performers.

Red Sox repeat!?!

Christianity

The way of Jesus is a jOURney-labyrinth.

"She" is out!?!

Hillary has lost; and now Barak H. Obama is preparing to mount a fierce campaign versus Republican nominee John McCain for the United States of America presidency.

I wish there was a true conservative in the race; and to me, it is going to come down to voting for the lesser of two evils.

Politics intrigues me because there is so much power given to so few.

the North Carolina Tarheels

Men's Basketball

Depth chart:

Is there any?

Back up F/C Alex Stepheson is transferring to a school closer to his family due to family health challenges. He played great in the 2008 NCAA tournament which saw the 'Heels lose to eventual champion, Kansas, in the Final Four.

PLUS starting backcourt (Lawson, Ellington) and outstanding 6th man (Green) have declared for the NBA draft.

Fortunately Ellington didn't stand out at the pre-draft camp and Green wants to be a lottery pick; so hopefully for Tarheel fans, those two will return and join Hansborough for another opportunity at the NCAA men's basketball championship.

Lawson is fast; and good. Is he ready for the NBA? I didn't think Raymond Felton was ready; and he's turned out the best yet from that class (McCants, May, Marvin Williams).

Like Being the Mayor

a national sports talk show host shares that talk radio is:

Like being the mayor. Everyone thinks it’s easy and they can do a better job. So develop a thick skin because listeners believe they can do a better job and you’re a moron.

Out Of A JOBA

Joba Chamberlain's starting debut for the New York cellar-dwellers was less than inspiring. He has an impressive arm though, throwing one pitch 101 mph. But in the first inning alone he walked 3 and had to throw 38 pitches!

I know I'm a Red Sox homer and I shouldn't bust on this 22-year-old kid who couldn't finish the 3rd inning and was charged with a balk. But it is a little fun to watch a rivalry's prodigy not perform so well. Hopefully it won't come back to bite me/Red Sox nation.

Office Space

One of my all-time favorite comedies; especially now that I live in a cubicle 40 hours a week.

I'd have to say my Top 5 Comedic Movies are:

1. Dumb & Dumber
2. Happy Gilmore
3. Tommy Boy
4. Office Space
5. So I Married an Axe Murdered

Top Chef

If you have not had the opportunity to watch this "reality" show on Bravo, turn the channel this Wednesday night @ 10 and watch Top Chef.

Intriguing, insightful and unscripted.

I could eat rare hamburgers covered with blue cheese crumbles and topped with thick slices of hickory smoked bacon in between a homemade honey wheat roll nearly every day.

But, with all the bad press on red meat, I've had to learn how to cook and impress through different avenues than a gas grill.

A gallon of milk ($3.89)

is cheaper than a gallon of gasoline ($3.93); which wouldn't be that surprising except for the fact that I live in freakin' VERMONT -- the state which used to be known for having more cows than people.

2008 NBA Draft: EASTERN CONFERENCE

Who would you take?

What 2008 Eastern conference play-off team needs to make the biggest move to become a legitimate 2009 NBA Championship contender?

Detroit needs a complete overhaul. Get rid of Flip and Rasheed. I'd try to work out a deal with Jordan and Charlotte's 9th pick for UNC alum 'Sheed and Afflalo. Or even better, send 'Sheed, Stuckey, Ratliff and Herrman to Miami for the #2 pick and get Beasley. (Who the HECK is Herrman anyway, a Darko wannabe?)

Cleveland - who wants any of those guys? They have absolutely no trade-value on that team. Maybe they should trade LeBron to NY for another bunch of guys who can't play and start over.

Orlando - get a guard! Trade up. Send Hedo, Jameer, Bogans and JJ to Minnesota for Mayo and McCants.

Toronto - ship Ford, Brezec and Kapono to Denver and bring Camby back with Diawara thrown in.

Wizards - get healthy & play together. PERIOD. Draft a bench. With the 18th pick don't pass on Douglas-Roberts.

Phila - you have the 16th pick. Do something. Choose wisely, the nucleus seems to be playing well.

Atlanta - was the 1st round a fluke, going 7 games vs. the eventual Eastern conf. champion Boston Celtics? Childress is terrible, play Law more and get a center. Maybe they could pick up Alexis Ajinca from France or GU's Hibbert ...

As for the lottery picking teams, trade the pics for more good players. Look at Cleveland, one super all-star can't win you a championship.

2008 NBA Finals PREDICTIONS

Boston CELTICS: 6 games (2), 7 games (3)
Los Angeles LAKERS: 5 games (3), 6 games (4), 7 games (3)

An UNOFFICIAL personality test/survey/poll

When you use a public bathroom facility to go the proverbial, "#2," do you use the bathroom stall closest to the door, middle or furthest from the door? I believe with that answer I will be able to tell a lot about you.

Now, for even greater depth of who you truly are (for men only; unless ... ),

If you walk in to an empty public bathroom which has three urinals, which one do you stand at?

My test results revealed that I am a very self-confident, yet sensitive man.

the Boston Red Sox

With David Ortiz, "Big Papi," hurt and out at least until the all-star break, is there any way the Boston Red Sox have a chance at post-season play? Is repeating as MLB World Champions completely out of the question?

Francona is more fortunate than most managers who lose their clutch performer. Though Varatek is the leader of the team (much like Paul Pierce of the Boston Celtics), Ortiz is the emotional leader (very similar to KG).

Francona definitely has options; move Manny to DH or even Casey. Fortunately, this team is relatively deep. Although no one can replace "Papi's" power in the batter's box, there is more than one guy who can/will step up and get base hits and/or RBI's.

PLUS what the HECK happened to Okajima last night? Not even an inning and he gives up 4 runs. That's his 5th blown save ... He is my favorite player because he's underpaid and (usually) performs extremely well. Pedroia-DESTROYA is a stud as well.

{My 4-yr. daughter's favorite player is "JOE-dacoby."}

... another question, will Yankees Joba do anything as a starter? Does it hurt them as a team game-in-game-out only having the "throw-at-Youk-cause-I'm-a-bum" pitching every 5th game?

2008 NBA Finals

Rivalry Renewed

Boston vs. Los Angeles

Celtics/Lakers

The last time these two teams met in the NBA Finals, Los Angeles won it's first of back-to-back championships. It also marked the last time the Boston Celtics were playing for the NBA championship. That was 1987.

The 80's featured Magic vs. Bird and a supporting cast of dream match-ups; Kareem, Worthy, AC Green & Byron Scott against Danny Ainge, DJ, McHale & Robert Parish.

This year's NBA Championship series will also highlight key players bound for the Hall of Fame. League MVP, Kobe Bryant, vs. the Truth, Paul Pierce. KG against Odom, Perkins vs. Gasol, Ray Allen, Rajon Rondo, Derek Fisher and some other guy ...

But, in my not so humble opinion, the x-factor will be if Coach "Doc" Rivers will be able to keep up with Finals-experienced coach, Phil Jackson.

I'd love to see the Celtics win in 6; but it is more than realistic that the Los Angeles Lakers could win in 5.

How will Rondo match-up with D. Fisher? Can Pierce and Posey contain Kobe? Who the heck is Ray going to guard? Will that be an advantage for Ray on the offensive end? KG should dominate in the middle as long as he posts up, don't you think? Should Perk be on Gasol or Odom?
