Pedroia's 2-out, off-the-wall double in the 8th drove in Jason Bay for a BoSox 1-0 lead. Pap closed things out for Boston, as they defeated KC; giving Lester the "w."

Lance Armstrong

"It's Not About the Bike: My Journey Back to Life"

I finished listening to this 'book-on-tape' driving to work this morning.

What a story ... the journey ...

Frankly, Oliver Wyman, the one who read, came across arrogant at times; thus portraying the stereotypical perception of Lance ...

However, no one can take away the accomplishments Lance Armstrong has achieved; and though tainted by the era of PED's in which he's ridden, what a compelling story.

On the final page of the SI double issue this week (July 13-20, 2009), Selena Roberts makes an interesting point, some 9 years after It's Not About the Bike was released. She writes, "Armstrong's inspiring ad is ribboned with a not-so-subtle concept: To scrutinize him is to criticize his cause; to be skeptical of him is to be anitcure."

All I know is currently Lance Armstrong is in contention for his 8th Tour de France championship:

"A split second off the lead with the might Pyrennees looming, Lance Armstrong now gets to see what his rivals can throw at him...The seven-time champion said he was happy to emerge unscathed from Thursdays 'nervous' ride...During his long championship reign on the Tour, Armstrong always made his mark by the first big mountains - methodically gaining on competitors while keeping an eye over his rear wheel." Ben Zobrist

How on-fire has Zobrist been since coming on WuW? THAT's how you make the most of your opportunity! (Ben's insertion in the Rays line-up; not coming on my live, 3-hr. Sun. night radio show.)

Last night Ben went 3-5, including a 3-run home run and the tie-breaking 9th inning rbi single which brought in C Crawford, defeating the Blue Jays 10-9.

Congrats

to Ben Zobrist, former WuW guest, for making the 2009 MLB All Star Game!

FYI

Matt Doherty and James Bilas are now friends on my 'show' FB account ...better believe they're receiving invites to come on the program ;)

BoSox pitching

The "Dice" rolled Smoltz; and neither has seemingly shown up ... but add Saito, Ramirez, Okajima, Delcarmen, Masterson, Papelbon with Penney, Lester, Wakefield & Beckett ... What other MLB team has a more formidable pitching staff?

Celtics

In essence, according to my humble, yet vocal opinion, the Celtics ‘traded’ away one of their hardest working and most talented bench players (coming back from knee surgery), Leon Powe, for an older player who COULD have been a perennial All-Star and arguably the greatest talented player at his position, Rasheed Wallace.

Seemingly the desire to win (again) now was enough for the current C’s to ‘gamble’ on this move; one many state 'Sheed to be your consummate underachiever.

Hey, it worked for the Patriots and Randy. Well ... it worked in the Regular Season ...

This week, July 12th:

Joe Fallon (former UVM goaltender):

2004-2005, the Bemidji, Minnesota native rewrote the school goaltending record books. Fallon finished his freshman season with a 17-10-4 record that included five shutouts in 32 appearances. His 1.96 goals against average ranked eighth in the nation while his .921 save percentage ranked 14th. He also finished 20th in the nation with a .613 winning percentage. Fallon’s 1.96 GAA and his five shutouts were new school single season records, while his .921 save percentage was the second highest single season record in school history. Fallon’s exceptional season earned him numerous honors including the ECACHL and the New England Divison I Rookie of the Year honors. He was also named to the ECACHL, USCHO and Inside College Hockey All-Rookie Teams. 2007-08, even though Fallon posted a 15-13-5 record with a 2.38 GAA and .915 save percentage during his senior season at the University of Vermont , it was a down year for the net-minder compared to previous seasons. That being said, Fallon became the schools’ all-time leader in shutouts (20) and is second all-time in NCAA history. He led the Catamounts to the Hockey East Conference final and was signed to an entry-level contract with the Chicago Blackhawks in April. 2008-09, assigned to ECHL Fresno, but moved to Gwinnett when Fresno folded.
