Full Bio:

Michael McDonough enters his sixth year as the head coach of men's basketball. McDonough is responsible for managing all aspects of the program as an NCAA Division III member.

Prior to assuming the head coaching position, McDonough served as an assistant at Southern Vermont for three seasons, during which time the Mountaineers won the 2002 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, and in 2003 finishing second in the GNAC and receiving an invitation to the ECAC Tournament. The Mountaineers returned to the GNAC Quarterfinals in 2006.

Coach McDonough believes in giving players the opportunity to perform and use their skills on the court, while living up to their responsibilities as students and citizens off the court, believing the two go hand-in-hand.

A native of Bennington, McDonough has extensive basketball experience. While an undergraduate at the University of Notre Dame, he served as a student manager for football under Coach Ara Parseghian and served as the senior basketball manager for former Irish coach and current ESPN basketball analyst Richard "Digger" Phelps.

McDonough graduated from Notre Dame with a degree in Architecture and is a licensed architect with his own private practice. Upon returning to Bennington, McDonough coached for six years in the Mount Anthony Youth Athletic Association Basketball Program, serving as program director for three years.

McDonough joined the Mt. Anthony Union High School boy's basketball staff in 1981 under his former coach and New England Hall of Fame member David Fredrickson, serving as freshman coach and varsity assistant for 18 years, during which time the Patriots won five consecutive Vermont Division I State Championships and made seven final four appearances.

Coach McDonough has also been a guest clinician for the Vermont Basketball Coaches Association and high school basketball summer camps, and returns to Notre Dame each summer as a director of Coach Mike Brey's summer basketball camps.

Coach McDonough has had considerable involvement in community affairs, currently serving on the Bennington Planning Commission and the Vermont Downtown Development Board, and is a past President of the Park-McCullough House Association and the Better Bennington Corporation, and served as Chair of the Bennington Historic Preservation Commission.
His efforts have been recognized with service awards from Mt. Anthony Union High School, the Chamber of Commerce, the Better Bennington Corporation and the Bennington County Regional Commission, and by being named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Bennington Rotary Club.
He resides in Bennington with wife Sandy.
